Molly Pitcher is the nickname given to a woman who took over her husbands position on the battlefield of the American Revolutionary War when when he was inured. Many historians suggest that Molly Pitcher may be a composite image inspired by the actions of a number of real women.

One woman was Mary Hayes who attended to the Revolutionary soldiers by giving them water. Just before the battle started, she found a spring to serve as her water supply. Two places on the battlefield of Manmouth Battlefield are currently marked as the Molly Pitcher Spring. Molly was a nickname for Mary at that time. Mary Hays spent much of the early day carrying water to soldiers and artillerymen, often under heavy fire from British troops.

FINDING INSPIRATION TO CREATE FINE ART Nature is an inspiration for many of Jans paintings. She feels encouraged to paint by her surroundings at home in Trabuco Canyon. There are four huge Live Oaks on her property and people have horses, a goat and chickens nearby. There are about a hundred homes in this rural California community at an elevation of about 500 feet at the base of Saddleback Mountain. It gets hot in the summer and rains for a few weeks in the winter. MISSION SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO Jan fell in love with Mission San Juan Capistrano that is a short drive from her home.
