Description
Molly Pitcher is the nickname given to a woman who took over her husbands position on the battlefield of the Revolutionary War when when he was inured.
Molly Pitcher is the nickname given to a woman who took over her husbands position on the battlefield of the American Revolutionary War when when he was inured. Many historians suggest that Molly Pitcher may be a composite image inspired by the actions of a number of real women.
One woman was Mary Hayes who attended to the Revolutionary soldiers by giving them water. Just before the battle started, she found a spring to serve as her water supply. Two places on the battlefield of Manmouth Battlefield are currently marked as the Molly Pitcher Spring. Molly was a nickname for Mary at that time. Mary Hays spent much of the early day carrying water to soldiers and artillerymen, often under heavy fire from British troops.
This painting was made from black and white etchings of the event.
